BAAC Photo conservation master-class in Tallinn

March 31 - April 1, 2016 BAAC, Art Museum of Estonia and Estonian Photographic Heritage Society organised a master-class by Sandra Maria Petrillo (Italy, SMPHOTO Conservation Studio)
"SILVER BASED PHOTOGRAPHIC IMAGES ON PAPER. Composite materials and their deterioration. Conservation and restoration". The workshop was held at Kumu Art Museum, Tallinn and 15 professionals from Estonian and Latvian archives and museums took part.

Opening words were given by Maria Mang (President of BAAC) and Kadi Sikka (Estonian Photographic Heritage Society). During following intensive two days Sandra Petrillo gave a thorough overview about the history and technology of the main historical printing processes. She also shared correct guidelines for the handling and long term preservation of these photographic materials.

The lectures were supplemented and enhanced by practical sessions, during which some important preservation issues were discussed and participants acquired various skills such as identifying photographic artefacts using hand-held microscopes.

In the end of the master-class participants were given a possibility to discuss and analyse complicated conservation and identification cases from their collections.
