Meeting-seminar with the President of International Council on Archives

August 2009,
Riga

BAAC took part in the professional meeting organized and hosted by the Latvian National Commission for UNESCO at the Ministry of Foreign affairs of the Republic of Latvia, 31 August, in Riga. (Coordination was provided from Canada via Andris Ķesteris and the Embassy of Latvia in Ottawa). The event was attended by the President of the International Council on Archives, Mr. Ian Wilson, directors of national Libraries and national archival institutions from all Baltic Countries, representatives of non-governmental organizations (BAAC, BaltHerNet), and professionals working at Baltic memory institutions.

During the meeting, Mr. Ian Wilson introduced Canada's experience in organizing and optimizing administrational resources at libraries, museums and archives and presented the Library and Archives Canada reorganization as an example.

Important topics about the cooperation between public and non-governmental bodies were also discussed at the meeting. It was agreed that NGOs are able to establish and coordinate international institutional networks for development and implementation of cultural heritage projects.  Such networking could be useful for receiving financial support from various foundations or organizations that are not supporting cultural institutions directly.
